Healthier Lives Project Awarded
Congratulations to Prof Cliona Ni Mhurchu and her project team on being awarded funding by the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge to evaluate the implementation and impact of the National Healthy Food and Drink Policy.

In 2015, the Ministry of Health requested that all New Zealand District Health Boards (DHBs) implement a healthy food and drink organisational Policy for staff and visitors. The National Healthy Food & Drink Policy was subsequently developed by nutrition and public health representatives from all DHBs and the Ministry. Although voluntary, the National Policy is recommended for use by DHBs and other public sector organisations. We will evaluate the Policy to answer four key research questions:
- Is the National Policy being adopted by public sector institutions and, if so, are there differences in level of Policy implementation?
- Where the Policy has been implemented, what has its impact been?
- What resources are needed to support Policy implementation and maximise its adoption by public sector institutions?
- What are the equity implications of the Policy for Māori, Pasifika and low-income New Zealanders?
The three-year evaluation will begin in January 2020 and involves a partnership with the Ministry of Health and the National Healthy Food & Drink network.
