The CESS@TION Trial - recruitment opens soon!

The CESS@TION Trial

We will soon be starting recruitment for our new quit smoking study - The CESS@TION Trial, funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. We are doing a study to test two products - cytisine tablets and nicotine e-cigarettes - to see if they help people stop smoking. Cystine is a medicine made from a natural chemical, similar to nicotine that is found in some plants. In humans, cytisine works to help reduce the satisfaction you feel from smoking. It also helps reduce the unpleasant feelings you can have when you haven’t had a cigarette for a while. Nicotine e-cigarettes replace some of the nicotine your body craves when you stop smoking. In this study, people will be randomised (like the flip of a coin) into one of three groups:

  • One group will get cytisine only
  • One group will get an e-cigarette device only
  • One group will get both cytisine and an e-cigarette device

Study products will be provided at no cost to people who take part in the study.

We will be looking for people who:

Smoke cigarettes every day

Want to stop smoking

Are aged 18 years or over

Have daily access to a mobile phone

Have not used an e-cigarette daily over the last month

Sound like you? Keen to help us? We hope to open up recruitment into this study in late April 2022, so check back soon to find out how you can join the study!
